When analyzing the horror of Katrina within Ward’s novel Salvage the Bones and the actual catastrophe that was broadcasted throughout the media, readers are able understand its true impact. It seems as though Ward brought to light the realness and severity of Katrina rather than just restate the obvious. Not to mention that the entire cause of the occasion was to a confrontation that had taken place beforehand at Randall’s basketball game. When daddy loses his fingers during the exact time frame of China killing her own puppy, intense emotions arose within me. The scene was a vivid surprise and seems to have even been a foreshadow of how shocking the arrival of Katrina was to the citizens of Bois Sauvage. These violent scenes create suspense of fear and sympathy fo r the characters in the story all the way up until the last horrifying event. Also, by adding these scenes Ward is able to anticipate the arrival of hurricane Katrina. Allowing readers to ponder upon how these characters are going to come together when Katrina arrives. These scenes also distract the reader from the obvious that a storm is on its way; however the characters within the novel seem to be disregarding it. When the storm finally hits readers are able to clearly see how the family sets aside almost every brutality to save each other’s lives. This is where the tenderness of the characters persona’s come in to play. In other words, although Ward wanted to place scenes of intensity within her novel, it is perceived to be that she did so with a mindset to build up to a mind boggling ending. Slavery has been abolished which gives more rights to black men, leaving women to fill the position as a modern slave. This was a period of such suppression of woman that they were treated as if they were brainless property, much like slaves. Janie refuses to succumb to society s standards of how woman should be treated. She becomes a feminist by fighting for women s rights to be bettered, if not equal to men’s rights. Janie became a feminist through trial and error of her three marriages. Through her failed marriages, Janie learns and constructs her own standards for how she will be treated, resulting in her finding true love. Her standards were far higher than society s for women, making Janie a pioneer for feminist views and women s rights. At the ripe young age of sixteen, Janie is forced, by her grandma, into a marriage she did not want. She is raised â€Å"From the traditional views of the grandmother† (Maupin) so Janie must comply to Nanny’s wishes. Janie is considered a woman at her age. But if you’re not enough without one, you’ll never be enough with one.† – A lesson important character, Irvin Blitzer not only learns but shares in Cool Runnings on his pathway to redemption. Director Jon Turtletaub teaches us that redemption is possible through the life of Irv, and the use of film techniques; cinematography, dialogue. In the bar and newsreel scenes near the start of the film, Irv is presented as a man who is hiding away from the world. We see this in the bar scene as Irv looks at a photo of himself in the past with gold medals, and then there is a reflection of the modern day Irv-older and overweight. While this action takes place we see Irv from a high angle shot (making him look even weaker) and hear him say, â€Å"Would you look at me then?†-Sighs-â€Å"Oh, would you look at me now?† This is a moment of truth for Irv, being forced to realize how far he has fallen. We also see how I rv would prefer to be hidden away from the world in the newsreel scene. Here, Irv shows the Jamaicans who are interested in going to the Olympics a newsreel featuring many terrible bobsled accidents. He is shown in this scene to have power, because he has knowledge. But he is using this negatively, to try deterring all interest, ultimately so he doesn’t have to be involved. Irv even says to, â€Å"always remember, your bones to don’t break in a bobsled crash. Ah no, they shatter.† Later on in Cool Runnings we find out about Irv’s past, where he cheated at an Olympic Games. He is obviously ashamed of this and has become cynical, hiding away form the world, and avoiding the consequences of his actions.
